UNCF Tampa Bay will host its annual Black History Month Walk for Education on Saturday, February 11, 2023, starting at 8 AM at Perry Harvey, Sr. Park; 1000 E Harrison St, Tampa, FL 33602.
Members of the community and friends of UNCF are invited to take part in helping Hillsborough County students get the education they deserve. This year’s Walk for Education kicks off Black History Month with a history-based path learning about historic leaders who have developed the historic district. The festival is a celebration of leaders who have paved a way for the development of education on our minority youth. The event will have vendors, entertainment and kids’ zone. So, strap on your walking shoes and join us. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. You can make a positive impact on the life of a student seeking a higher education by forming a team or donating to the event.
Florida is the home of three historically black colleges and universities: Edwards Waters College, Florida Memorial University, Bethune-Cookman University, and Florida A & M University. More than 6,100 students statewide are getting their education with UNCF scholarships at colleges and universities across the country.
“We invite all members of the Tampa Bay community to join us as we raise money to send deserving young people to college,” said Gwen Hewitt, Area Development Director of UNCF. “Everyone who believes that ‘A mind is a terrible thing to waste®’ should attend as we inspire and empower our young people to secure passports to opportunity by way of their college degree.”

To Sleep With Anger (1990) 1h 42m / PG / Drama
3:00pm Sunday, Feb. 12
A slow-burning masterwork of the early 1990s, writer/director Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger is a singular piece of American mythmaking. In a towering performance, Danny Glover plays the enigmatic Southern drifter Harry, a devilish charmer who turns up out of the blue on the South Central Los Angeles doorstep of his old friends. In short order, Harry’s presence seems to cast a chaotic spell on what appeared to be a peaceful household, exposing smoldering tensions between parents and children, tradition and change, virtue and temptation. Interweaving evocative strains of gospel and blues with rich, poetic-realist images, To Sleep with Anger is a sublimely stirring film from an autonomous artistic sensibility, a portrait of family resilience steeped in tradition and folklore.
Guests attending Black Love Classics Series films are invited to raise a glass for good, courtesy of series sponsor Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. The company – which is founded, owned and led by a Black woman, and is named after the first known African American master distiller, Nearest Green – will donate a dollar for each Old Fashioned cocktail sold in a pledge to raise up to $1 million for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
