This simple axe is one of the firefighter's best tools while in the air. It can be used to cut holes in doors and roofs to allow the firefighter to gain access to a fire. Unlike electric chainsaws it can be carried easily and always works. Before being raised up on the ladder tip a firefighter needs to make sure all of his tools are on board. Once the arial ladder has been extended the fighter can easily reach the top of high-rise buildings.
Aerials are trucks with an extendable ladder.
These trucks are often used in urban areas where there are lots of tall buildings. The ladder can quickly be extended to rescue people trapped on higher floors. The ladder also allows the firefighters to pump water onto the roof of a burning building.
The front compartment is divided into two sections.
The driver and captain sit in the driver's compartment. The nozzle-person and the plug-person sit in the crew cab. Each person has a specific seat and a specific job, this enables the crew to respond very quickly to an emergency call. When the truck arrives at a fire the plug-person jumps out and attaches the hose to the fire hydrant, the nozel-person and the captain grab the hose and attack the fire, and the driver operates the pump panel.
The Halligan is considered a forceable entry tool.
It is a specialized firefighting tool; hefty, long, and slender, the Halligan is a supple prybar that is used to force open doors and windows. During a car fire the Halligan is also used as a prop to hold open car hoods and doors. Think of the Halligan as a very versitile firefighter's crowbar.
The Hurst Spreader is often called "The Jaws of Life".
This powerful tool is used to open car doors that have been crushed during an accident. There is also a Hurst Cutter which can cut a car in half. The Hurst Power Plant provides electricity to both the Spreader and the Cutter. These tools are refered to as Extraction Equipment because they are used to extract people from tight locations.
Many times firefighters have to work at night.
They need to provide their own light. A fire truck always contains flood lights, spot lights, and extension cords in order to illuminate the working environment. Firefighters carry handheld spotlights in order to safely make their way through darkened buildings.
The pump panel is operated by the driver during a fire.
The fire truck provides the power necessary to pump water throught the hoses. The panel contains valves and guages to manage the water used while fighting a fire. There are other devices used with the hoses. These devices are grouped into two categories: appliances and tools. An easy way to tell them apart is that the appliances have water flowing through them, while the tools do not.
Firefighters use a variety of saws to handle fires.
Along with the handsaw pictured here, several power saws are carried aboard a firetruck to allow the firefighters to get to a fire very quickly. Although you might have seen a circular saw, the firefighters use a specialized version known as a rotary rescue saw, nicknamed K-12. The K-12 saw is designed to cut holes in the roof of a burning building to allow the smoke to escape.
Wedges are used to balance unstable objects.
During an automobile accident a car may turn over or fall into a ditch. Additionally when buildings burn, the walls, floor, and roof become dangerous and could collapse. The firefighters carry a variety of construction tools, such as a hammer and nails, and build walkways or stabilizers to make it safe to enter.
