What is retrofitting?
Retrofitting is the installation of devices that replace or modify existing plumbing fixtures in your home to save water. Some restrict flow, others displace volume. They all help you do your part to protect the limited drinking water supply.
Why retrofit?
Retrofitting -- replacing old plumbing fixtures with water-saving ones -- is a simple way to save water, energy and money. EPA WaterSense-labeled fixtures are up to 20 percent more water efficient than standard installations.
Retrofit what?
- Toilets: Pre-1994 toilets can use between 3 and 7 gallons per flush. Replacing your toilet with a standard off-the-shelf model today can cut that amount to either 1.6 or 1.28 gallons per flush, depending on which model you choose.
- Showers: Replacing your 2.5 gallon per minute with a free WaterSense-labeled showerhead from the Tampa Water Department will reduce the flow to 1.5 gallons per minute to save water, energy and dollars.
- Bathroom and Kitchen Faucets: The average household faucet can flow up to 3 gallons per minute. Installing free low-flow aerators from the Tampa Water Department can provide you with a bathroom faucet aerator that uses only 1.0 gallons per minute and a kitchen aerator that uses only 1.5 gallons per minute.
We will provide City of Tampa water customers with new low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators at no charge. You may install the fixtures yourself or have a licensed plumber install them. The plumbing retrofit kit is valued at $15, including mailing costs. Recipients are required to return a completed Installation Acknowledgment verifying the fixtures were installed at the property.
