Purpose:

The Main Street Commercial District is characterized by its ornate architecture and numerous assets, creating a vibrant mixed-use center. The Main Street Commercial District Plan offers recommendations to transform Main Street into an attractive, vibrant commercial district that reflects the community’s rich history and culture with a safe, walkable, and connected community. The plan for the district emphasizes ten key ideas: improve the appearance of the district; address vacant buildings and lots; promote safety and security; preserve and connect with history; incorporate existing businesses into the plan; image, marketing, and promotion; connect with the West River area and the waterfront; involve everyone - tap the local energy; turn alleys into assets; and provide adequate parking to support the growthof the district.

Key Findings:

Developed alongside residents, business owners, architectural students, planners, engineers, designers, and non-profit organizations. The plan promotes evolution and development in targeted areas while protecting traditional pedestrian patterns, established historic character, and the existing businesses and residents of the area. This implementation plan provides the framework to taking recommendations and turn it into reality.
