The Tampa Police Department has launched an innovative program to enhance communication between first responders and individuals with special needs such as autism or any disability that affects their communication. This is as part of our effort to ensure the safety of all Tampa residents when they have interactions with police.
The first step in the voluntary "Help Us. Help You” program is to collect addresses and some basic information for individuals with special needs who live in our city. Our officers will be able to access this vital information in the event of any emergency or call for service at the individual's home. This will benefit families and officers by reducing the possibility of misunderstandings or unnecessary stress for children and adults with disabilities when they come in contact with first responders such as police and fire rescue.
Participating in this registry is strictly voluntary, and all information will be kept confidential. You must live within the Tampa city limits to register.
If you have a child or loved one at home with a disability that affects their method of communication and/or ability to understand and follow verbal instructions, I urge you to register for this program and provide our officers with information that can help us, help you keep your family safe.
