On March 25, 2012, Jynasis Ellis along with a male friend were both shot while in a vehicle in the drive thru of Nick's Gyro located at 3501 E. Hillsborough Avenue. Jynasis and a couple friends were at a nightclub earlier in the night and left in the vehicle with her friend to look for food. Jynasis was transported to Tampa General Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries; her male friend survived from his gunshot wounds. The male friend may have been the intended target for the shooting as he was involved in an altercation at Ben T. Davis Beach days prior to the murder; Jynasis was not involved in that affray. Surveillance footage from the night of the murder displayed a lone gunman with his face covered exiting a dark pickup truck. That pickup truck is seen previously circling the drive thru along with witnesses that were present. Several retaliation shootings were reported the same night of Jynasis' murder.
