Mission Statement

The United Civic Organization of Tampa, Fla., (UNICO’s) Mission is to support academic achievement through scholarships for students who otherwise could not afford post-secondary education. Members celebrate cultural heritage and fellowship.

Our Story

UNICO is celebrating its 75th Anniversary! Since 1951 UNICO has been a cornerstone of community empowerment, cultural appreciation, and educational advancement in the Tampa Bay area. Founded by passionate volunteers from Tampa’s vibrant Cuban, Sicilian, and Spanish communities—including business leaders, skilled tradespeople, and professionals—UNICO was born with a goal to celebrate Latin heritage and inspire the next generation.

What began as student achievement awards for excellence in language and the arts has grown into a robust scholarship program, changing lives and fostering opportunities. Today, UNICO proudly provides scholarships to students attending Hillsborough College, the University of South Florida, and the University of Tampa. To date, over $300,000 in scholarships has been awarded, helping countless students pursue their dreams. These scholarships, administered by the schools, focus primarily on supporting students with financial need. In 2025 UNICO endowed a Workforce Development Scholarship for trades and technical careers at Hillsborough College.

Our efforts are fueled by the community we serve. Each year, UNICO hosts signature fundraising events. On March 8 UNICO will hold its Annual Fish Fry at Lowry Park and open to the public, celebrating camaraderie and shared purpose. See Annual Events and Tickets tab for more information.

UNICO’s much-anticipated Jaibada Dinner, an authentic Tampa crab enchilado feast, and lively Bocce Tournament, will take a sabbatical this year.​
