The Movie

🌋 Reel Science Premiere: Dante's Peak Erupts on Nov 1!

You're invited to our first-ever Reel Science night! Dig into the fact and fiction behind movies with a scientist.

Our premiere feature is Dante's Peak, the 1997 volcano disaster classic. Expert volcanologist Dr. Mel Rodgers will be on hand to separate the real science from the Hollywood lava. Can you really drive a truck across a lava flow? Would a mountain lake actually turn to acid? Is the grandmother going to be okay?

Dr. Rodgers has the answers.

The expert: Dr. Mel Rodgers

Mel is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida.

“I don't have one of those shiny silver suits, but I am a real life volcanologist. I fly drones to make maps of volcanoes, I also put out instruments that measure tiny earthquakes inside volcanoes. All of this to help us understand how volcanoes work, and how we can keep the people who live near them safe.”
