Officer Henry R. Lett, age 38, and Officer J. M. Bird went to Central Avenue near Constant Street about 5:00 p.m. on a report that Jessie Glenn was threatening to shoot a woman in a restaurant.
The officers were walking toward Glenn who was standing on a street corner, to arrest him for disorderly conduct when he dashed into an alley reached for his gun. Officer Lett reached for his gun at the same time and they both fired two shots. Both were wounded. Glenn survived, but Officer Lett died that night at a local hospital.
