Tampa Police Make Arrest in September Homicide

TAMPA, FL. (October 7, 2024) -- On October 1, 2024, Tampa Police arrested 26-year-old Tyree Newsome (black male, 2/12/1998) in connection with the homicide of a 19-year-old male that occurred on September 23, 2024.

The incident took place in the 1600 block of E. 24th Ave. just after 9:00 p.m. Responding officers found the black male victim lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by Tampa Fire Rescue.

Through a detailed investigation involving witness interviews and surveillance footage analysis, detectives identified Newsome as the suspect. The investigation revealed that the shooting was the result of a dispute that had escalated from earlier in the day. Newsome confronted the victim and his friend in the 1600 block of E. 24th Avenue, and during the altercation, Newsome produced a firearm and shot the victim multiple times.

“Our detectives worked tirelessly to bring this suspect to justice,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “We hope this arrest will provide the first step toward closure for the victim’s loved ones.”

Newsome has been charged with First Degree Murder and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He is currently being held at the Orient Road Jail.
