TAMPA, FL. (February 4, 2025) - - Two Tampa Police officers narrowly escaped injury Tuesday morning after being fired upon by a suspect at an apartment complex. The suspect is in custody.

Just after 10:00 am on February 4, 2025, a detective with 21 years of service and a corporal with 9 years of service were conducting follow-up investigations on an unrelated robbery at the Azula North Apartments, located at 4939 E. Busch Blvd. While at the complex, they observed 23-year-old Matthew Fowler (black male, 9/11/2001), attempting to enter vehicles and apartments.

During an attempt to identify Fowler, a struggle ensued, and he drew a Glock 9mm handgun with an extended 30-round magazine and fired on the officers.

Fortunately, neither officer was struck.

One officer returned fire, but Fowler was able to flee on foot. A perimeter was quickly established, and Fowler was apprehended a short time later near N. 50th St and Temple Heights. His gun was recovered from a nearby dumpster.

Fowler, a convicted felon with an extensive and violent criminal record, faces charges related to Burglary and two counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer.

"Every officer who wears the badge understands the inherent dangers of this profession, yet they selflessly answer the call to protect our community," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "These officers, already engaged in an active investigation, demonstrated their dedication by proactively addressing criminal activity. Their actions, which placed them directly in harm's way, undoubtedly contributed to the safety of our residents. We are incredibly grateful that our officers were not injured, and we are now focused on ensuring justice is served."

Fowler will be transported to Orient Road Jail.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting aspect of the incident, both actions consistent with established Tampa Police Department policies.

The names of the officers will be released after their families have been informed.
