TAMPA, FL. (May 22, 2025) - As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Tampa Police Department is reminding everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly, both on the roads and on the water.
Beginning Friday May 23, 2025, the department will increase patrols as part of Operation Zero Proof, an effort focused on driving and boating under the influence. This initiative aims to ensure a safe holiday weekend for all.
“We can never forget that Memorial Day weekend is a time for us to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country and our freedoms,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “While the extended weekend provides us added time to enjoy our family and friends, we urge everyone to remember the reason for this holiday weekend and make responsible choices to keep our community safe.”
Last year, during Memorial Day Weekend, there were 40 DUI arrests made. The goal is to have zero impaired driving or boating incidents this year.
The department encourages using designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transportation to get home safely. Boaters are also reminded to follow all safety regulations, wear life jackets, and stay sober while on the water.
