TAMPA, FL. (August 20, 2025) - - Tampa Police Officers, working with the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Apprehension Unit, have successfully apprehended and arrested 36-year-old Joshua Roelofs (white male, 3/9/1989) who had fled the country after failing to appear in court on charges including two counts of DUI Manslaughter.
“This arrest is a significant step toward justice for the victims of the fatal crash, which tragically claimed the lives of two individuals,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. "The apprehension also sends a clear and resounding message that the Tampa Police Department will tirelessly pursue justice, no matter how far a fugitive runs. This outcome is a testament to the dedication of our investigators and the power of strong law enforcement partnerships.”
The search for Roelofs began immediately after he failed to appear for a court date on his charges. Through a detailed investigation, officers determined he had fled the country. Using investigative means to track his movements, they determined he had gone to Columbia. On August 11, the U.S. Marshals Task Force provided crucial intelligence to Colombian authorities, pinpointing Roelofs' location at the Finca Rivendell Paradise Girardota hotel in Antioquia, Colombia. Acting swiftly, Colombian officials responded to the location and took Roelofs into custody without incident.
On Tuesday evening, August 19, 2025, Colombian officials escorted Roelofs on a flight to Miami International Airport. There, he was met by officers from the Tampa Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit, who formally took custody of him before transporting him to Orient Road Jail, where he is currently being held without bond.
