City of Tampa Expands Green Team with New Grant Funding
The City of Tampa has been awarded new grant funding to continue its Green Team program for the next three years, this time with double the number of members compared to the last cohort.
The newest Green Team class began training with a formal swearing-in ceremony on Monday afternoon, September 8, at the City Center at Hanna Avenue.
The last cohort, comprised of nine members, graduated on July 31, 2025, after achieving significant milestones during their year of service including:
Planting 375 trees and more than 9,400 plants
Removing over 49,000 pounds of litter and debris from city parks and waterways
Educating more than 4,500 residents and youth about environmental stewardship
Earning professional certifications such as the Urban Agriculture Specialist Certification
Supporting critical city initiatives, including hurricane response efforts following Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024
“Programs like this are at the heart of our mission of Transforming Tampa’s Tomorrow,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “This young team is building workforce skills while helping to restore our environment, engaging with residents about ways to protect it, and strengthening our city’s resilience for years to come.”
With 19 new members beginning training this week, the program will continue to provide hands-on learning and meaningful impact across the city. Funding for the Green Team was made possible through an AmeriCorps grant administered by Volunteer Florida.
