Road Safety Improvements in Ybor City Are Underway

Ybor City Roadway Safety Improvements

As a direct response to the tragic crash on November 8, 2025, in Ybor City, the City of Tampa and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) are moving forward with new measures aimed at making the district safer.

The first step includes repaving a portion of 7th Avenue from Nebraska Avenue to Nuccio Parkway. Along with the new pavement, 36 on-street parking spaces and two bus bays will be added to narrow the roadway -- naturally slowing drivers as they approach the Ybor City gateway. Additional paving and more on-street parking is also planned in other areas of Ybor (see attached map). In total, 3.75 lane-miles will be repaved and nearly 45 new parking spaces will be be added in the area.

Speed limits along the corridor will also be reduced to slow drivers.

The Mobility Department will fund the roughly $400,000 paving project and the work will be completed by local contractor Preferred Materials within the first two weeks of March.

Other planned safety upgrades include continuing the CRA's rebricking of 7th Avenue, which helps calm traffic, and installing crash-rated bollards at high-volume intersection crosswalks. The bollards would be constructed alongside the rebricking, which is expected to begin later this year.

Ybor City has always been a safe place for drivers and pedestrians. Over the past decade, there has not been a deadly crash on 7th Avenue, other than the November incident. While no infrastructure can eliminate every risk, these improvements will go a long way toward making Ybor City even safer for the many visitors stopping by to take in its rich culture.
