TAMPA, FL. (AUGUST 14, 2026) - - Following an overnight surveillance operation addressing a recent string of commercial burglaries, the Tampa Police Department, in partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, arrested three suspects in the early hours of August 14, 2026.
"Thanks to the determined efforts of those involved in this ongoing investigation, these suspects are now off the street and our neighborhoods are safer," said Acting Chief Brett Owen. "Investigators are reviewing evidence in other open burglary cases to see if these three may have been involved so we can get some answers and justice for everyone affected."

25-year-old Melvin Jackson (black male, 1/9/2001), 34-year-old Adrian Mitchell (black male, 2/19/1992), and 35-year-old John Echevarria (white male, 10/14/1990) were arrested just after 3:00 am after Tampa Police observed them burglarizing the Taiwan Express, located at 11022 US Hwy 41 S, in Gibsonton. They had been previously seen unsuccessfully attempting to burglarize a McDonalds restaurant, located at 7032 Big Bend Rd.
With Echevarria and Jackson confirmed to be inside the business, Tampa Police Officers approached the front of the building to take them into custody. Echevarria attempted to flee from officers, including one officer who was holding his firearm. As the officer attempted to arrest Echevarria, he began to physically resist, violently swinging his arms. During this time, the officer's firearm discharged one round. A second officer then assisted in the arrest, and they were able to gain control of Echevarria and take him into custody.
Fortunately, no injuries were sustained by officers, deputies, bystanders, or suspects. An administrative review is underway, which is standard procedure for any weapon discharge.
Complying with the repeated lawful commands of officers, Jackson exited the business and was arrested without incident.
Additional officers boxed in the white 2015 Kia Optima occupied by Mitchell, who was also taken into custody. The car was impounded.
Jackson was charged with Burglary and Criminal Mischief.
Mitchell was charged with Burglary and Criminal Mischief.
Echevarria was charged with Resisting an Officer with Violence, Burglary, and Criminal Mischief.
At the time of his arrest, Echevarria was also found to be on active felony probation and now faces additional charges for Violation of Probation.
The three suspects were transported to Orient Road Jail.
Tampa Police consider the three arrested individuals as persons of interest in additional burglaries, and this remains an active, open investigation. Further updates can be provided as the investigation allows.
