Medical Professionals Advocate for the South Howard Flood Relief Project
Recent flooding in Parkland Estates and Palma Ceia Pines is prompting members of Tampa’s medical community to speak out about the need for the South Howard Flood Relief Project.
Repeated heavy rainfall over the past several weeks has once again flooded neighborhood streets, reinforcing concerns about chronic flooding and access to critical medical care. During severe rain events, flooding has made it difficult, and at times impossible, for patients, physicians and staff to reach HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital and nearby medical offices, creating a serious public safety concern.
The South Howard Flood Relief Project, now at 60% design, is intended to address that longstanding problem. The proposed system includes a 10-by-10-foot box culvert extending from Howard Avenue and Bayshore Boulevard to the AMI Pond in Palma Ceia Pines, providing a much larger pathway to move stormwater out of the neighborhoods.
The system is designed to provide flood relief during a five-year, eight-hour storm producing 5.3 inches of rain, an event capable of flooding nearly 100 homes and businesses and making neighborhood streets impassable for thousands of residents, patients and others who rely on these roadways.
