Parks & Recreation Highlights Special Populations & Inclusive Recreation In Tampa
Families who participate in Tampa Parks & Recreation's Therapeutic Recreation Program for children and adults with special needs say the service has been life-changing and are encouraging others to join and learn more.
Funded by property taxes, the SPIRIT (Special Populations & Inclusive Recreation In Tampa) is free, with only a $15 annual Rec Card, and provides programming year-round for kids and adults who may not fit comfortably into other programs because of social or behavioral issues.
SPIRIT is led by Casey Tolar, who holds bachelor's degrees in psychology and recreational therapy. She began working in Parks & Recreation in 2018.
"This is an amazing opportunity to get specialized and safe care for children who might struggle in larger environments," Mayor Jane Castor said. "We don't want families to have to look far for enriching programs for their children, and best of all, the cost is unbeatable - relieving them from the financial stress that comes with finding care they can afford."
Children (6-16 years old, but mostly K-5) have weekly classes in Art, Homeschool Social, and STEM.
Adult offerings of Life Skills, Art, and Fitness, are aimed at 16- to 25-year-olds.
The Therapeutic Recreation program is available year-round, and is open when schools are out for Summer, Winter Break and Spring Break.
