DETAILS:

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor is handing KJ Sails the key to the city where he was born and raised. The University of South Florida Football cornerback and self-proclaimed “Future Mayor of Tampa” is receiving an opportunity to serve the community as an “honorary mayor” on February 18.

Sails’ schedule includes attending a ceremonial ribbon cutting, receiving updates from City officials and learning about various day-to-day tasks associated with running a city. He will end the day speaking to a group of after-school students at the Police Athletic League— a hub that fosters positive relationships between cops and kids.

Mayor Castor learned of Sails’ aspirations to serve as the City’s CEO after he led a unity walk through his childhood neighborhood—formerly Central Park Village—last June. In Fall 2020, she took him under her wing as part of the Lee Roy Selmon Mentoring Institute—a specialized mentoring program that helps USF student-athletes transition from college into the next phase of their lives.

“KJ is just as much of a natural leader off the field as he is on it,” said Mayor Castor. “Our city is on the trajectory towards a great transformation, developing more in the next six years than it has in my lifetime. It’s going to take a visionary leader who has bold ideas and compassion like KJ to continue moving our city forward, while ensuring our vulnerable communities are not left behind.”

Sails is currently preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft.
