Tampa Police Arrest Two in Attempted Murder Investigation

TAMPA, FL. (APRIL 17, 2026) - - Tampa Police have arrested two suspects in connection with an attempted murder investigation that left two individuals injured on Thursday.

On the afternoon of April 16, 2026, Tampa Police responded to the 3600 block of Machado St. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located two black males, an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers provided immediate first aid until Tampa Fire Rescue arrived and transported the pair to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the injuries were not fatal.

While initial reports suggested three suspects may have been involved, detectives worked through the night to confirm information, gather evidence, witness statements, and develop leads. Through their investigative efforts, they positively identified the two shooters as 18-year-old Jaquez Lawson (black male, 04/27/2007) and 17-year-old Darrian Wise (black male, 01/21/2009). The investigation revealed the shooting was a targeted confrontation.

Detectives eventually tracked the suspects’ vehicle, determined to be a 2015 silver Hyundai with distinct damage, to a location in Parrish, FL. The Tampa Police Department contacted the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) for assistance. MCSO deputies successfully took both Lawson and Wise into custody as they were leaving a residence under construction. Two firearms were recovered at the scene and taken into evidence.

"This is a stark reminder of the tragedies that occur when teenagers have easy access to firearms and choose violence to settle disputes," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "Our detectives worked relentlessly through the night to identify and track these suspects, and I want to extend my sincere thanks to members of the community who provided helpful information to investigators, and a special thanks to Sheriff Rick Wells and the men and women of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office whose partnership helped us ensure these two will face swift justice."

Wise has been charged with Attempted Murder and Minor in Possession of a Firearm. Lawson has been charged with Attempted Murder.

Both suspects were taken to the Manatee County Jail pending transport back to Hillsborough County.
