MEDIA ADVISORY: “Battle in the Bay” Demonstration Returns for SOF Week 2026

"Battle in the Bay" Returns: Thrilling Waterfront Capability Demonstration Back at Tampa Convention Center

Witness the heart-pounding action of elite military precision as the "Battle in the Bay" returns to the downtown waterfront. On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) will host its signature Capability Demonstration outside the Tampa Convention Center as part of Special Operations Forces (SOF) Week 2026.

This year will feature a mock scenario involving a "kidnapping" of Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and a successful rescue using helicopters, boats, drones, ATVs, and scuba divers. While the demonstration is primarily designed for attendees of the SOF Week conference, the public is invited to witness this rare display of military excellence free of charge.

Known as the "Battle in the Bay," this high-stakes live simulation features U.S. Special Operations Forces and personnel from 10 partner nations. This tradition occurs as part of the SOF Week Conference every other year and showcases the technology and innovation of U.S. Special Operations Forces. It also allows forces to practice the careful coordination and strategy required in a real-life emergency.

Noise Advisory

Residents should expect loud noises during this simulation, including gunfire sound effects, pyrotechnics, and low-flying aircraft, on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Hearing protection is recommended for those watching in close proximity to the waterfront.

  • Harbour Island

For those unable to attend in person, the event will be live-streamed at: https://sofweek.org/ussocom-capabilitiesdemonstration/

Parking, Traffic, and Access

  • Parking: The Tampa Convention Center Parking Garage is closed to the public through Thursday, May 21. Attendees are encouraged to use the Pam Iorio or Fort Brooke garages and arrive early to account for congestion.
  • Road Closure: Franklin Street (from Channelside Drive to Harbour Island) and the Harbour Island Bridge will remain closed during daytime hours through Friday afternoon, including during the demonstration.
  • Marina: The marina basin adjacent to the center will be closed to all non-event boat traffic Tuesday through Thursday (May 19–21) from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
  • Facility Access: The Tampa Convention Center, including the on-site FedEx Office, is closed to the general public during SOF Week.

A Tampa Tradition

SOF Week has called the Tampa Convention Center home for over a decade. This year’s conference is expected to generate an estimated economic impact of $19,108,310 for the City of Tampa and the surrounding region, and supports an estimated 6,500 jobs for the community.
