New Tampa Boulevard Paving Begins
Drivers in New Tampa will soon enjoy a smoother and safer ride as the City of Tampa begins a major million-dollar paving project on New Tampa Boulevard.
Crews are repaving approximately 1.8 miles of New Tampa Boulevard, from Meadow Pine Drive to Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, with smooth new asphalt. Ajax Paving Industries has been contracted to complete the work, which is expected to take about eight weeks or less (weather permitting). In an effort to reduce traffic interruptions as much as possible, the paving work is taking place at night, with finished portions of the roadway re-opening to traffic each morning. Roughly 12,000 drivers per day travel New Tampa Boulevard.
In addition to fresh pavement, the project includes upgraded pavement markings and new ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramps, making the roadway safer and more accessible for everyone who uses it.
This significant investment has been championed by New Tampa residents, the Tampa City Council, the City's Mobility Department, and especially Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera.
"I am thrilled that this repaving project - a big priority for me and my New Tampa constituents - is coming forward," said Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera. "New Tampa wanted the best and New Tampa is gonna get the best with this project for this often traveled Boulevard. This is a big win for quality of life for the Alaska of Tampa."
The repaving of New Tampa Blvd costs approximately $1 million.
Once complete, this project will add approximately 3.5 lane-miles to the City's 2026 paving program, which has already resurfaced about 28 lane-miles through June across the City. Our goal remains to meet or surpass last year's record of roughly 80 lane-miles paved. A standard measurement in traffic engineering, a lane-mile is one mile of a single traffic lane, so paving a one-mile stretch of a two-lane road equals two lane-miles.
Since 2019, the City of Tampa has paved at least 336 miles throughout the city limits.
