City of Tampa Offering Free Pool Access During Heat Advisories
With multiple heat advisories in effect this week and heat index values reaching 112 degrees, the City of Tampa is helping residents beat the heat by offering free admission to all city-operated public pools whenever a heat advisory is in effect.
Beginning today, August 19, residents can visit any of Tampa’s 12 public pools free of charge during normal operating hours on days when a heat advisory is issued.
Pool schedules and operating hours vary by location. Some pools are also used by high school swim teams, and portions of those pools may be reserved for student-athletes during designated times. The pools will remain open to the public during those times, but available swimming areas may be limited.
Residents are encouraged to check current hours and schedules before visiting a pool at tampa.gov/pools.
The city also operates nine splash pads throughout Tampa, which are already free to the public and provide another way for residents and families to cool off. Locations and current operating hours are available at tampa.gov/splashpads.
"Extreme heat can be dangerous, and we want to make sure our residents have safe, accessible places to cool down this summer," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Opening our pools free of charge during heat advisories gives families another option for relief. We encourage everyone to take the heat seriously, stay hydrated and check on neighbors who may be especially vulnerable."
Residents can stay up to date on heat advisories and receive heat safety information by texting HEATSAFE to 888-777.
During periods of extreme heat, residents are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day and check on children, older adults, neighbors and pets.
