Ramped Up Mosquito Mitigation Efforts

Neighborhood Enhancement’s Critical Role in Tampa’s Quality of Life

As more rain moves across the region this week, the City of Tampa’s ramped-up mosquito mitigation efforts continue in partnership with Hillsborough County.

Over the past three months, Neighborhood Enhancement crews have removed more than 23 tons of illegally dumped tires and are continuously working with business owners to reduce conditions that can lead to mosquito breeding grounds.

Mosquito mitigation is just one of many services Tampa’s Neighborhood Enhancement Division provides year-round for the health and safety of Tampa’s communities. The department is responsible for inspecting dilapidated, fire-damaged, open/vacant structures, zoning/land-use issues, property maintenance concerns, and removing debris, litter, and illegal dumping across the city, including debris from homeless encampments. Over the last year, crews have removed more than 7,000 tons.

The team also handles non-criminal complaints and conducts inspections to ensure properties are in compliance with Tampa’s city ordinances, codes, and regulations. From January 2026 to date, more than 12,700 complaints have been received and more than 30,000 inspections have been completed. Complaints can range from over-grown lots, to abandoned vehicles, accumulated trash on a private property, graffiti, and more.

Crews also prune, trim, and remove trees, when necessary, located on city-owned property. Crews have completed more than 400 emergency work orders in just the past three months.

"We cannot underestimate the value of our Neighborhood Enhancement team — also known as Code Enforcement — to the quality of life in Tampa which we are increasingly known for," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Though these hardworking team members often work behind the scenes, the results of their labor are everywhere. Clearly, not a single city service is more important than the other — together they work in unison to ensure Tampa continues to be a place we are all proud to call home."
