Great American Teach-In Requests

The City of Tampa is looking forward to connecting with students and faculty during the Great American Teach-In on November 18, 2021. Our organization employs more than 4,000 employees with diverse skill sets, backgrounds, and interests. The Teach-In provides our staff with an invaluable opportunity to interact with students while explaining how local government operates and the many career opportunities that are available in public service. Schools within the city's limits will be given priority for in-person requests.

Due to a high volume of inquiries, we may not be able to accommodate requests for virtual presentations other than those listed below and in-person speakers.

Hospitality and Venue Management presented by Tampa Convention Center Sales & Marketing Manager Juan Lopez

Go behind the scenes with Tampa Convention Center Sales & Marketing Manager Juan Lopez to learn what it takes to operate Tampa's 600,000 square foot Convention Center along with managing sports & entertainment venues and about the hospitality industry. Elementary and middle school audience.

Careers in Tampa City Government featuring the Employment Manager Mike Swain and the City HR Team

The City of Tampa is a multifaceted organization where students may typically start in a seasonal, temporary or entry level position such as (Service Attendant, Recreation Leader, Customer Service Clerk/Representative, or Mailroom clerk) and move on to different departments and/or levels for many years.  Students will receive an overview about: Background check requirements, promotional opportunities, benefits including tuition reimbursement, and more.

Meet Mayor Jane and Desa the Dog

Join Mayor Jane Castor for a fun and informative conversation about what it is like to serve as the City of Tampa's 59th mayor. Learn interesting facts about the city while enjoying a pop-up visit from Desa, the Mayor's Director of Toys, Naps & Treats. Elementary audience.

Discovering Robots and Drones presented by Senior Applications Programmer Jonathan Girwar-Nath

Senior Applications Programmer Jonathan Girwar-Nath also known as, Mr. G the robot scientist, shows how robots and drones work along with other interactive fun science experiments. Elementary and middle school audience.

Tampa Police Department K-9 Unit

Back by popular demand! Some Tampa Police Department Officers have partners with fur and four legs! Register for our “Keeping up with K-9” Great American Teach-In presentation to learn more about our K-9 Unit and why K-9’s are essential members to the police department. Students will even have the opportunity to virtually meet one of our K-9’s with his Patrol Officer partner and see a demonstration on a few ways the K-9’s are trained. This is one you won’t want to miss!

Transforming Tampa's Tomorrow with Mayor Jane Castor (Register Here)

From Tampa's first female police chief to the city's 59th mayor, join Mayor Jane Castor as she shares her journey in public service and why she feels students play such an important role in shaping the city's future. Middle and high school audience.

10:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.

A Walk Through The Park presented by Parks & Recreation Director Sherisha Hills

Hop in with Parks & Recreation Director Sherisha Hills for a virtual ride through various Tampa Parks and Recreation facilities while learning about exciting community programs and career opportunities. Elementary and middle school audience.

11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 

Tampa Police Department Mounted Unit

Did you know one police officer on a horse is equivalent to 10 police officers on the ground when it comes to crowd control?! Saddle-up and learn fun facts like this and more when you register for our “Reigns and Ride” Great American Teach-In presentation featuring our Mounted Unit. Meet one of our patrol horses along with their patrol officer partner to learn how vital they are to keeping our city safe. You will even get to see where our horses live when the aren’t working. We hope to see you virtually.
