A new traffic pattern on East Brorein Street and South Tampa Street is set to take effect the night of Tuesday, October 20.
Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) will begin a long-term traffic pattern change near the Tampa Convention Center beginning Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 8:00 PM, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances. A portion of South Tampa Street beneath the expressway (commonly referred to as the S Curve) will be closed at East Brorein Street. Drivers will be re-routed via a temporarily converted eastbound lane on East Brorein Street to continue reaching South Franklin Street.
- Access Maintained: Drivers will still have full access to the Tampa Convention Center Garage entrance on East Brorein Street and the Exhibit Hall Upper Loading Docks on Franklin Street.
- Detour signage, barricades, and lane separators will be installed throughout the area to help drivers navigate the new configuration.
- Project Duration: This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place for approximately two years until November 2028 (estimated).
- Overnight Restriping Notice: Please note that East Brorein Street between S. Tampa St. and S. Franklin St. will be closed overnight from 8:00 PM on Oct. 20 until 5:00 AM on Oct. 21 for road restriping before the detour begins. The Tampa Convention Center parking garage entrance will be closed during this time.
This traffic pattern change is a part of THEA's South Selmon Capacity Project, which will add a new inside travel lane to the expressway to help ease congestion and increase safety. The closure will allow crews to safely install support pillars for the expressway expansion.
Project updates will be shared to this web page.
About the Project
This work is part of THEA’s $362M toll-funded South Selmon Capacity Project, which will expand the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway to six lanes (adding one lane in each direction) from west of Himes Avenue to east of Florida Avenue. Once complete, this project will help reduce downtown congestion, improve roadway safety, and enhance underpass lighting and sidewalks.
