How to Dispose of Items for Free

Who qualifies: Tampa residents with active city solid waste accounts

What you need to bring every visit:

  • Driver's license or government-issued ID
  • Proof of active Tampa solid waste account

Important: Both documents must show the same name. The waste must come from the address on your solid waste account.

Note: Residential property means four or fewer housing units under Florida law.

If you live outside Tampa city limits: Visit the Hillsborough County website for disposal options.

Items You Can Dispose of for Free

Appliance limit

Two appliances per visit

  • Appliances
  • Barbecue grills (empty propane tanks and remove cap and valve)
  • Furniture and mattresses
  • Yard waste (loose, in paper bags, or bundled with jute twine only - no plastic)

Items That Cost Money

Payment: Credit card only

  • Commercial waste
  • Items delivered in commercial vehicles
  • Large amounts of waste (more than a typical household generates)
  • Construction debris (tile, plywood, roofing, fencing, drywall, plaster)
  • Household garbage
  • Mixed loads (free and paid items together)
  • Large car parts
  • Carpet
  • Tires

Alternative Tire Disposal Sites

Safety Requirement

You must wear personal protection equipment (PPE) on the tipping floor. You can buy PPE at the scale house if you do not have it.

Items We Cannot Accept

Never bring these items:

  • Hazardous, radioactive, biological, or infectious waste
  • Liquid waste
  • Fuel oil
  • Gasoline or flammable waste
  • Propane tanks (unless you remove the cap and valve)
  • Wet paint or drywall mud
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Explosives
  • Electronics (take these to Hillsborough County Solid Waste for free disposal)

Construction materials we do not accept:

  • Bricks
  • Rocks
  • Cinder blocks
  • Dirt
