Despite their lack of political and economic rights, women were critical to maintaining the religious system of classical Athens. As ‘cultic citizens,’ they joined men in honoring the gods and the city, as well as celebrated their own rituals in both domestic and civic contexts in the company of other women. Their association with fertility and reproduction made them indispensable performers of rites connected with the agricultural year. Women also served as priestesses, as dedicators, and as public benefactors.
Women-only festivals further offered opportunities to build and strengthen female social networks, to act autonomously and perhaps even to subvert social norms. Domestic rituals accomplished by women in turn helped to mark the life stages and strengthen familial identity. This talk will discuss a few examples of women’s religious activities in classical Athens, drawing on some of the vases from the collection of Joseph Veach Noble as well as TMA’s permanent collection as illustrations.

After the U.S. Presidential Elections in November 2024, it is fitting to return to the birthplace of democracy, Athens, around the 6th through 4th century BCE. Keynote speaker Dr. Jennifer Roberts traces the political reforms that led to the breakdown of the power of the nobility and the rise of popular government within the larger context of ancient Greek history. As well as discussing the women and the enslaved population excluded from participation in government, Dr. Roberts will explore the Athenians’ rationale for denying citizenship to immigrants and their descendants in the context of anxiety about immigration in the United States, beginning with the founding era. Among those who did belong to the citizen body, she will ask how the Athenians arranged to involve men (not women) of all social classes in government. Identifying eight strategies for maximizing citizen participation, she will explore how the Athenians’ approach might be adapted to the large nation-states of the modern world, the United States in particular.
After the keynote address, Sheramy Bundrick, Scott Perry, Jennifer Roberts and Branko van Oppen will continue the discussion about ancient democracy and its influences on modern politics. The discussion will focus on the development of popular government in ancient Greece, its impact on the foundation of the United States of America. Additionally, the panelists will consider the ancient monuments and works of art related to the birth of democracy in Classical Athens during the 5th century BCE. Ancient art and 19th-century photography illustrating archaeological sites on display at the Tampa Museum of Art will pass the review as well. The panel will engage the audience in a debate about current events and lessons learned from the near and distant past.”
