The Photograph follows a journalist, Michael (LaKeith Stanfield) who finds himself drawn into the life of the daughter, Mae (Issa Rae), of a famous photographer and the dramatic circumstances around her life and Mae’s parentage. It’s a beautiful and sensitive treatment of a complicated story, not afraid to take on subtlety and unwilling to give in to sappy cliché or trite contrivance. Being released at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, it also never got the acclaim it deserves, so we’re proud to bring it back to you for another chance to get its flowers.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early for a live podcast recording of “Screen it or Stream it” with Cahlen Fogg and Genoa Gibson, and to network with local community organizations in the lobby. Cahlen and Gen will be chatting with Octavio Jones about his work as a photojournalist and his life behind the lens.

A unique project from Otto Preminger, Carmen Jones is a modernized (as of 1954, anyway) take on the classic Georges Bizet opera Carmen. In this version, Carmen (Dorothy Dandridge) is a flighty, flirty factory worker who gets in trouble and has to be delivered to jail by a military guard, Joe, (Harry Belafonte). He falls for her, which Carmen finds appealing, if funny — and which his fiancée, Cindy Lou, emphatically does not. If you’re familiar with the opera, or opera in general, you know this turns out poorly for all involved. A vivid and lively musical with a timely and humanistic flavor, Carmen Jones is a one-of-a-kind mashup of themes and emotions that are timeless in every way.
Guests are invited to stay after the screening for the film talk “The Staccato Notes of Identity in Carmen Jones,” led by Taylor Raye Curry, Associate Professor of Film at University of Tampa.
The Black Love Classic Movie Series is presented by Tampa Electric (TECO) in collaboration with the City of Tampa’s Community Engagement & Partnerships Department. Post-show Film Talks are sponsored by Hungry Bull Productions and the Restaino Family Foundation. Promotional support provided by WEDU PBS.

Reclaiming the Time-In-Between
A Somatic Journey into Flow, Presence & Nervous System Ease
In music, dance, and poetry, it is the transitions — the rests, the pauses, the moments between movements — that give everything meaning.
Yet in modern life, these spaces are disappearing.
Every spare second is captured, monetized, and filled. We are pulled toward constant stimulation, leaving almost no room for the quiet inner rhythms that regulate creativity, intuition, and wellbeing.
This workshop is an invitation to reclaim those time-in-between spaces and return to a natural state of flow — a place where the gears of go, go, go finally disengage. Mind and body need this extended “neutral” between gears: a place where the mind settles, the body softens, and the nervous system can exhale.
Through gentle movement, breathwork, somatic sensing, and guided awareness, you’ll explore:
- how to shift from sympathetic overdrive into parasympathetic ease
- the role of the vagus nerve in emotional regulation and creative access
- how staring into space, drifting, and daydreaming are important for a healthy mind and body
- what it feels like to inhabit spaciousness rather than urgency
This workshop is fully experiential. Learning and doing are woven together to help you feel your way back to your quiet center, where clarity, creativity, and resilience naturally arise when given room.
You’ll leave feeling grounded, restored, and equipped with simple practices you can use anytime to regulate stress, enhance focus, imagination, resilience, and improve overall health and well-being.

A thesis dance concert constructed from everyday actions, gestures, and task-based movement, organized through choreographic tools and principles. Drawing on early 1960s postmodern minimalism, the work treats ordinary behavior as both compositional material and a pedagogical strategy. In turn, it broadens what we recognize as dance, offering access beyond codified technique and widening participation regardless of technical training or ability.

Time changes everything: the natural world, the human world, and our perception. For the contemporary world, the question is how can we ensure that “the river” keeps flowing and remains healthy? Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse make art about water and highlight the unperceived ways in which the natural world enhances the human world and mitigates the consequences of our way of life. Their talk will merge art and science through a visual journey of their collaborative work. The talk will conclude with a conversation with curator Joanna Robotham about the overlapping themes of their work and that of Charles Atlas’ installation Kiss the Day Goodbye.
Lectures are offered free with the cost of daily admission

In this class, students will learn how to paint a head study in oil from the live model. First, we’ll cover the basics of color theory and paint mixing. Participants will then map out their study with an under-drawing, before building up the painting with a direct, or alla prima technique. Through demonstration and individual critiques, students will gain confidence in handling oils and develop an understanding of how to capture a likeness.
